In the heart of the Eastern Cape Karoo, David & Karen McEwan have been making their way through farming holistically and living a sustainable life. Working with nature to preserve and grow a future for their family and the next generation to come.
Fairfield Farming
David is a 4th generation farmer on Fairfield of Scottish heritage. He farms with indigenous Tuli cattle and Dohne Merino sheep with a sustainable and holistic approach to regenerating the land.
Intensive lambing and utilization of irrigated pastures produce good quality lambs, combined with Total Grazing practices ensuring productive and progressive farming that regenerates the veld while keeping animals healthy for sustainable future farming practices.
Fairfield Garden & Kitchen
Qualified as a chef, but an entrepreneur by heart Karen has been keeping herself busy with organic veggie gardening - making use of some permaculture principles. She hosts open garden days with garden talks and serves hearty farm lunches made from the organic produce of the farm.
Her own range of frozen meals and freshly baked and bottled karoo goodness, as well as organic veggie seeds, are available for direct orders or at mentioned markets.
She also offers private and event catering options with tailor-made menu's exclusively for small groups of 40 or more guests.
Free Range Chickens
Free range farm chickens form part of the sustainable management on irrigated pastures.
Layer hens live in portable chicken tractors on the lands and are moved twice a week to Fresh pastures.
They follow the ewes with lambs and calves that feed on the lands to clean up the last bits of feed left behind. They also take care of any unwanted pests, parasites and larvae.
Eggs are harvested daily and weekly deliveries are done in Graaff Reinet and Middelburg.
